Château Le Chatelet 2004
3,3ha 15 a 20000 bottles
The Berjal family owns the vineyard in Saint-Emilion, located on the limestone-clay plateau between Clos Fourtet and Beauséjour Becot. The plateau produced a bursting purple wine with a promising bouquet, which reveal some stone fruit (cherry, plum) and a woody taste gently liquoriced. The palate is fleshy and rich, then the tannins appear a little bit firm, but they will become softer in two or three years.
In 2004, Château Le Châtelet has been awarded of a star in the Guide Hachette des vins.
Saint-Émilion

On more than 200 samples, the quality is obviously very heterogeneous. The biggest defect is the surextraction linked to the lack of maturity. Successful wines are rather aromatic and established. It was necessary to avoid the "overdose" in new barrels which was the case for Châteaux which worked well both on the vineyard (severely) and on the wine cellar (delicately). H.D. et P.M.
Château le Chatelet : Very beautiful aroma, meaning nose (black fruits) and beautiful breeding. Full and delicious palate
The Bordeaux Champions : Cru Monplaisir (Bordeaux), Château Fleur-Haut-Gaussens (Bordeaux Supérieur), Château du Champ des Treilles (Sainte-Foy-Bordeaux), Château le Chatelet (Saint-Émilion), Château Gombaude Guillaud (Pomerol), Château Jean de Gué (Lalande-de-Pomerol), Château Haut Colombier (Premières-Côtes-de-Blaye), Château Guerry (Côtes-de-Bourg), Château la Clare (Médoc), Prismo Palatum (Sauternes).

Le Châtelet
A perfect soil (3,3 hectares) on the best part of the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, between Clos-Fourtet and Beauséjour-Bécot, very close of the “Grandes Murailles” (High wall) of the old town.
Despite of the Pierre Berjal’s death, Julien Berjal (his grandson) had to face the downgrading in 1996.
Since then, Julien Berjal wants to take his revenge for the honor familial. This scenario is in progress.
This year, in the middle of a blind tasting, the Château Le Châtelet wine appear to be a pearl of freshness.
16,5. Open nose, rose and cherry, the great sweetness of the limestone plateau. The wine appear to be woody but the freshness of the wine dominates easily. Tannin crunching, delicate touch, good length and great elegance.

Château Le Châtelet - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
Rating : 17/20 / Vintage : 2005 / Ageing : 15 years / Opening : 2010
Wonderful spot in the very heart of the plateau, between Beauséjour-Bécot and Clos-Fourtet. This Grand Cru Classé lost its rank in 1996 following family problems but the soil is here ! Julien Berjal, which took over the vineyard, aims to regain the “Grand Cru Classé” rank in the next ten years. He has completely restructured the vineyard. This wine is one of the best bargain of the vintage.
Tasting rating : Red rose and black cherry bouquet, fine palate, fresh, woody with a delicate and greedy tannin, all the elegance of Saint-Emilion’s royal plateau !
Ranked until 1996, this small vineyard, based on the clay and limestone soil of Saint-Emilion, has been tooked over by Julien Berjal in 2002. Julien Berjal owns too a vineyard in Lussac. His work has been awarded : the 2004 vintage and the 2005 vintage got both a star. The mean color is red and possesses amber reflections, the rising bouquet expresses a warm aroma made of roasty wood and ripe black berries. The palate is tender, tasty as the nose. This bottle is ready, with its silky tannins.

16 – Julien Berjal has tooked over this nice small vineyard from his grandfather. Château Le Châtelet is located on the limestone plateau very close to Beauséjour-Bécot. The 3,3 hectares vineyard has been relegated in 1996. Since then, Julien Berjal works hard to rank the wine as a Grand Cru Classé.
Woody, vanillia, tender palate, small crispy tannins, elegant, nice finish and sweet fruit highlighted by a unobtrusive wood.

In 2005, the wine seduced us, we awarded it of the “petite merveille” rank ( “little wonder” rank). In 2006, the wine confirms and gets the best rating in blind tasting label.
Tasting rating : Nice red velvet appearance. Magnificent nose, red fruits, woody and elegant, well-constructed palate, tannins well extracted, fruit kept until the finish, greedy fineness.

Ch. Châtelet – Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
Rating : 16,5/20 / Vintage : 2007 / Ageing : 12 years / Opening : 2010
Julien Berjal, heir to former Grand Cru Classé (until 1996), works hard to rank the wine as a GCC for the next classification in 2016 (or before, according to justice’s decisions about the classification) : “Since 2002, I have worked a lot in the vineyard. For instance, all the posts have been changed and the cutting indeed. I am very interested in organic culture, all the plots are vinified separately; it is very important because we have two hectares between Clos-Fourtet and Beauséjour-Bécot which are located on hill and one hectare located on a low plateau which is a limestone soil. The conditions for the vine to grow are very different. In 2007, the “Merlot” vine grown on limestone soil resisted whereas the “cabernet” vine suffered from the weather conditions and half of the vines have been lost.” When you vinify separately the different variety of grapes and plots, you understand better the vineyard and you succeed better the blending of the different grapes varieties. Julien is testing out wooden winemaking in 400 liters rooms with “bâtonnage” (suspended wine lees to increase the aromas of the wine). While testing the barrels (40% are new barrels) in the cellar, we comprehend better the differences and choices that they impose. Blending grapes : 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet franc.
Tasting rating : Dark red appearance, black and red fruits nose, filled out palate, unobtrusive wood and fineness tannins. The whole is promising and should be appreciated upon 2010 but too improve in cellar. A vineyard which the glass is very near of its former rank Grand Cru Classé.
